The Adult Learners’ Week Awards celebrate the achievements of outstanding adults that have transformed their lives through learning.

2011 Winner

Denise Chéné, 2011 Senior Learner Awards Winner, Yorkshire and the Humber

Denise Chéné says she is “a new woman at the age of 66” because of learning. With the support of her daughters after a painful divorce at the end of a long marriage, she was encouraged to take part in induction training at Crossroads Care in Harrogate. Her employer encouraged her to take an NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care.

“I had not been allowed to do anything like this new learning before and my independence had been minimal,” says Denise. But she loved her job so much she decided to give it a try, and succeeded. “I feel so happy and positive. I hope I can go on forever in my job and continue to help the lives of the people I care for.”  Liz Winship, CEO of Crossroads Care Harrogate, Craven and York, says “Starting a new career as a Carer Support Worker and helping others has given Denise the strength she needed to see her way through her personal troubles and gain the strength to cope. Her life has been transformed due to her new learning achievements.”

NIACE [the National Institution of Adult Continuing Education] is calling on schools, colleges and businesses to hold Reading Breaks to encourage more people to fall in love with reading on World Book Day 2012 (Thursday 1 March 2012) following publication of 8 new Quick Reads from best-selling authors including Maeve Binchy, Alexander McCall Smith, James Caan and Tony Parsons.

On World Book Day 2011 hundreds of schools held Family Reading Breaks where parents and carers joined their children in finding out more about books and how they could help each other explore and enjoy the world of reading together. For the next World Book Day, NIACE is hoping that even more schools and workplaces will get involved to help reluctant readers discover a passion for books.

To help make these Reading Breaks a success, comprehensive packs for schools and workplaces, complete with copies of the new titles (and a display stand for workplaces only), can be ordered fromwww.quickreads.org.uk/reading-breaks. The packs for schools will also include a selection of children's books.

Following the publication of these new Quick Reads, there will be a major campaign - 'Fall in Love with Reading' - around Valentine's Day 2012. 'Fall in Love with Reading', will encourage lapsed readers or anyone who has never picked up a book to discover the pleasure and benefits reading can bring.

Emma Cliffe, Project Manager of Quick Reads at NIACE, said, 'In 2011 hundreds of schools helped children and parents enjoy books and reading activities together, and we are inviting all organisations - schools and other children's and family centres - across the country to get involved for 2012. Research, including NIACE's recent literacy inquiry, shows that parents' reading habits are the single most important factor in children's literacy and reading and the Family Reading Break provides a great opportunity for teachers to talk to mums, dads and carers about their reading and how they can help their children. These breaks will build on current family learning initiatives that schools may be running.'

She ended, 'Businesses, too, have identified that literacy initiatives in the workplace improve productivity, attendance and morale, and help workers feel more confident in their jobs and more positive about their future careers. Quick Reads have been an integral part of helping many thousands of people to read, complete and enjoy a book for the first time in their lives - something they thought would never happen. They then go on to read more and more and pass on their love of reading to their friends and family.'
